Weight Loss Tips

Welcome to my page on weight loss tips. Did you know that you can lose weight on any diet. The key is to stick with it. That's where most of us run into trouble. We start a diet but feel deprived so we give up.

Many of the ails of aging are related to weight. Those who feel the best and look the youngest usually are at a healthy weight. Extra pounds can cause diabetes, heart trouble, even macular degeneration. And weight gain usually leads to belly fat which is linked to even more health issues.

So to get started, choose a diet that you can stick with. And don't call it a diet. Make a lifestyle change. If you've read any of the nutrition tips on this website, you know how important fruits and vegetables are to anti-aging. Guess what - they are low in calories.

If you want to find a diet that is uncomplicated, count calories. When I started counting calories I realized that I could have a small piece of chocolate cake at the July 4th barbeque. I made it really small so I could have a taste, but it didn't blow my calories for the day.

Use the tool below to figure out how many calories your body needs to maintain its current weight. Then reduce the amount you eat each day to lose weight. If you reduce that calorie requirement by about 500 calories a day, you will lose 1 pound in a week.

The healthiest weight loss is about 1-2 pounds a week. Also, don't go below 1200 calories in a day. That's too low.

If you exercise, you can eat a few more calories and still lose weight. But remember, most people think they are burning more calories than they really are. Use a tool like the free ipod app "Lose It" to monitor both calories eaten and the calories burned during exercise.

Try these other weight loss tips:

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. This is a no brainer, but an important tip.

  • Drink a glass of water before meals. This fills up your stomach and makes you feel full quicker. Consumé or a broth soup does the same thing.

  • Track what you eat on a regular basis – use a notebook, a log like the ultimate Diet Log, an ipod/iphone application such as “Lose It”, or even bracelets/coins from awristatrac.com to keep track of what you eat.

  • Know why you eat - Emotional eating or eating without thinking can sabotage the best of intentions no matter how many weight loss tips you use.

  • Pack a lunch instead of eating out. If you must eat out – chose a salad. But choose wisely. Some salad dressing are loaded with calories.

  • Watch the weekends. Some people eat more on the 2 day weekend than they do the entire 5 day work week. Be aware of what you eat on Saturday and Sunday.

If you feel that you need more help, a group based diet might be better for you. There are many on the market like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and others. If you like the idea of a group but don't want to join one of these, enlist the help of a friend that is also serious about weight loss so you can encourage one another.

Stay away from fad diets. They'll work because they are low in calories, but often, they are not healthy. Make good food choices and you'll never have to "diet" instead you'll be eating healthy and losing weight at the same time.
