Stress and Antiaging

Stress is a natural part of life. In fact, it can be good for us. The problem arises when we allow these situations to take over our lives. Many studies have shown that our health is affected by how we react to stress. Among other things, it can destroy our immune system and cause our skin to become thinner. It can also produce feelings of anxiety and frustration. Long term, it can even result in diseases that we associate with aging.

I've done some research on the topic and there are lots of medical explanations as to what is happening in the body. But I've decided to just focus on what we can do to relieve the strain on our bodies. The Holmes & Rahe Test, often referred to as the Life Stress Test can help assess how much strain you are under. Click here for another test that helps to assess these levels at your job.

No matter what type of pressure we are under, everyone needs outlets to relax. Try one or more of these tips every day to keep your stress under control. This helps your body to function better and stay younger.

Tips to Follow

Take a walk - especially outside. Research has shown that walking outside with fresh air and trees helps to reduce mental strain. Take a 20 - 30 minute walk during the day or during your lunch hour to clear your head and relax.

➢ Take a nap. The countries where a siesta is common might be on to something. A 20 minute nap can do wonders.

➢ Spend time with friends. These should be good friends that you can laugh and relax with. Stay away from people who are draining on your time and/or emotions.

➢ Exercise - This puts helpful hormones back into your system that can decrease feelings of depression. Experts agree that exercise is essential to reducing the pressure you may be feeling in your life.

➢ Don't drink much alcohol. Many people, especially men, have a drink to relax. However, studies have shown that drinking over 2 ounces can actually increase stress levels.

➢ Meditate and relax - You don't have to do any fancy kind of meditation, although you can learn some techniques to help you. But emptying your mind of worries and deep breathing can help to relax you. Studies have shown that meditating can lower blood pressure.

➢ Progressive relaxation - I've used this occasionally when tense. Basically, it involves tensing a muscle for a few seconds then gradually relaxing it. Start with the muscles near the top of the body and work downward. Physical and occupational therapy programs teach and use this method.

➢ Watch your anger - Learn to express your anger in positive, not destructive ways.

➢ Get a massage - There's nothing much more relaxing than one of these. Put money in your budget to get one on a regular basis.

Detox in a bath

➢ Work on a hobby

➢ Adopt a pet

➢ Smile

You may not be able to eliminate all the pressure in your life, but you can reduce the affects it has on your well-being by trying some of these tips. Anti-aging isn't just about looking younger, but feeling younger too.
