Stopping the Clock

Stopping the Clock was published in 1996 by Dr. Ronald Klatz and Dr. Robert Goldman. These physicians co-founded The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in 1993. At that time, anti-aging medicine was just becoming recognized as a viable specialty. Today, there are many anti-aging physicians around the world.

The chapters include:

1. Who Wants to Live to Be 150? - This chapter outlines the history of anti-aging medicine and provides an introduction to the book. At the end of the chapter is a basic list for longevity for those interested in really "stopping the clock." It also lists the "Rules for Immortality." This is my favorite part of the first chapter.

"The first and most important rule of Anti-Aging Medicine is DON'T DIE!"

"The second rule of Anti-Aging Medicine is DON'T GET SICK!"

"The third rule is DON'T GET OLD!"

2. Theories of Aging - The name says it all. Filled with various theories of why we age, this chapter is rather scientific. However, it is not difficult reading and those wondering why we age will be very interested.

3. Melatonin - The book now gets into some specific hormones and how they affect the aging process. I used some of this information on my page about melatonin, however this chapter is much more extensive. It outlines the function of melatonin in our bodies and how the decrease of this hormone affects us. There is also advice to those who wish to use this supplement.

4. Human Growth Hormone (hGH) - This chapter explains what the human growth hormone is and how it affects our bodies. It also lists its limits and side effects. There has been much more research done on this topic since this book has been written, but this is a good start for those wishing to know more about hGH.

5.DHEA - I know why this hormone has a shortened name. The actual name is dehydroepiandrosterone. Try to say that 3 times. "DHEA is the most abundant naturally-occuring steroid hormone..." This chapter explains what it is and its relationship to our immune system. It also suggests various diseases that may be affected by our loss of DHEA as we age.

6. The Female Sex Hormones: Estrogen and Progesterone - This chapter explains the roles of these two hormones and the controversy over hormone replacement therapy. In addition to the benefits, it also lists the limits and dangers of taking the hormones. I appreciated the section of botanical nutrients that may ease menopause, as I am not a big fan of replacement therapy. However, as each person needs to make up her own mind, this chapter is a good overview of the benefits and side effects of the treatment.

7. The Male Sex Hormone: Testosterone - This chapter is for the men, although there is a section on testosterone loss in women. The authors explain the male version of menopause, andropause and the affect is has on a man's body. There are also several pages devoted to the prostate and prostate cancer. Of particular importance is the section on preventing prostate problems which outlines specific lifestyle changes that men can make to decrease their chance of getting prostate cancer. Many of these are also listed on my men's antiaging page.

8. The Miracle Minerals: Chromium, Selenium, and Magnesium - The title is self explanatory. These three minerals are vital to our body and many of us are not getting enough of them. This chapter explains their contribution to our bodies and gives helpful information for those who wish to supplement these minerals.

9. The Vital Antioxidants: Vitamins C, E and A (Beta-Carotene), and CoQ-10 - This long title simple lists the vitamins that are explained in the chapter. The authors explain how antioxidants work in our bodies and give suggestions to dosage. There is also a section on natural vs. synthetic vitamins. Antioxidants are vital to "stopping the clock."

10. Thyroid - This chapter details the affect that the thyroid has on our health and what symptoms are evident in a thyroid deficiency. It gives suggestions to help you discover if you might have a thyroid problem. It also lists supplements that support the thyroid.

11. Exercise of the Immortals - "... exercise is the closest thing to an anti-aging pill that exists." This chapter lists the benefits of exercise (we all know there are many.) It also gives tips on choosing the best form of exercise. Finally, it details specific exercises that you can do at home.

12. The Immortals: Successful Athletes Over 60 - A wonderful chapter that tells about athletes all of whom are over 60 years of age and still actively working on "stopping the clock." The authors tell how Jack LaLanne, Bob Delmonteque, Bill Pearl and many others train and live healthy lives at a more advanced age.

13. The Long-Life Diet: Nutrition for Longevity - "A good diet can make an enormous difference to how quickly we age." If you want some good antiaging diet tips this chapter is a good one to read. It gives specific suggestions on what food and herbs are good for our bodies and which ones are detrimental to our health.

14. Mind Over Matter: Anti-Stress Tips For Anti-Aging - This chapter deals with the relationship of stress to aging. It includes both an internal and external stress index to help you determine your stress level. There are also 25 strategies for coping with stress.

15. The Longevity Test - This chapter includes an anti-aging test to help determine your biological age. Our biological age is determined by our health, while our chronological age is simply how long we have been alive. It's a fun test to find your potential estimated life span.

16. Pioneers of Anti-Aging Medicine and Their Personal Secrets of Longevity - This final chapter gives the personal secrets to "stopping the clock" of the authors and other anti-aging pioneers.

If you are interested in "Stopping the Clock," this book may hold some valuable anti-aging tips.
