Skin Antiaging Care
Sun Protection

Give your skin antiaging care every day by protecting it from the sun. The sun is the major cause of the physical signs of aging. Wrinkles, dark spots, drying skin - these are all caused by the sun. Too much sun exposure can also cause skin cancer. You may have heard many of these sun protection tips, but they bear repeating since many of us don't follow them. Don't feel like reading about them? Watch a quick summary.

Sun Protection Tips:

➢ Stay out of the sun. The sun's ultraviolet rays are what causes the majority of our skin aging and also the possibility of cancer. A short time of sun exposure is necessary for our bodies to manufacture vitamin D. But 20 minutes outside is usually enough.

➢ If you need to be outside longer, wear sunscreen. Typically, we don't wear sunscreen often enough. The sun's rays are damaging even when it is cloudy or overcast. We should wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or 30 when we are outside.

➢ Since our faces are always exposed, women should wear foundation with an SPF of at least 15 every day. Men should wear sunscreen or a moisturizer with sunscreen on their faces every day. This will help keep your face looking younger since your face is protected.

➢ Try to stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 and 2. This is the very minimum. Some experts suggest that we stay out of the sun between 10 and 4. This is much more difficult, especially if you work outside or enjoy outdoor sports and activities. Just be sure to wear sunscreen during these peak UV hours.

➢ And of course, you can always cover up. Wear lightweight fabrics and light colors to keep cooler. Be sure to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them by wearing sunglasses. Choose ones with UVA and UVB protection. And of course, a hat will help shade your face.

➢ If you really must have a tan, stay away from tanning beds. These UV rays are as bad or worse than the sun's rays. Try a sunless tanner to give your skin a glow without the damage. That's what I do in the summer (or when on vacation). I use a self-tanner with an SPF of 15. That way, I'm protecting my skin and still getting a great tan.

Protect your skin from the sun and you will go a long way to helping your skin look younger - not to mention protecting yourself from cancer. Give your skin antiaging care every time you go outside.
