Metabolism Boosters

We've all seen the ads for metabolism boosters on TV.

“Boost your metabolism!”
“Use XYZ product and you will lose weight!”
“Is your metabolism keeping you from losing weight?”

But do these metabolism boosters work? Or is there a better way?

Metabolism is simply the process by which our bodies take energy to extract more energy from the foods we eat. This energy is in the form of calories. So basically, we want our bodies to burn more calories than we eat.

The word metabolism has been thrown around a lot in regards to weight loss. But it also plays a part in aging - or rather, aging plays a part in it. As we age, our metabolism can slow down. This may be the result of various factors, but the main reason may be, that as we age, we lose muscle tone. Our lean muscle mass decreases. And lean muscle burns more calories than other tissue (including fat).

There are several ways to boost metabolism. The best way is through exercise, specifically strength training. When we lift weights, we are building back that lean muscle mass (which burns more calories). It is important to plan a strength training routine several times a week. Once a week or a hit or miss program won't build muscle or raise your metabolism.

✰Anti-aging Tip - Your anti-aging program should include 2-3 days of strength training each week, interspersed with 2-3 days of aerobic exercise.

Cardio exercise is also an important metabolism booster. Research has shown that not only is your metabolism raised during exercise, but remains elevated for several hours following your workout. And as you improve your health with exercise, your metabolism improves too. Studies have shown that a person who exercises has a higher resting metabolism than someone who does not exercise.

Want some more metabolism boosters?

➣ Drink Cold Water - Water helps the liver to metabolize fat stores. And the body takes more energy when the water is cold.

➣ Don't Skip Meals - Our bodies go into a defense mechanism and think we are starving, even if we need to lose weight. So eat something. It will keep your metabolism from slowing down.

What about supplements that claim to boost metabolism? Some of them contain herbal ingredients that have been shown to increase metabolism and reduce appetite. I am currently taking one that contains guarana and it does help me from being hungry. But don't rely solely on these supplements. I am also lifting weights and watching what I eat.

If you do choose to use a metabolism booster supplement be sure to read the label. Health Magazine listed these ingredients to stay away from:

➣ Cacara - it's a natural laxative - Who wants to lose weight that way?
➣ Dandelion - this will only help you lose water weight
➣ Ephedra - This is a dangerous ingredient and can increase the risk of heart problem and stroke. It's just not worth it.
➣ Garcinia - there is a possible link to liver damage
➣ Hoodia - the company that holds the patent on this says that weight lose products are still years away. If you find a supplement with this ingredient, it may be safe, but it is useless.

Your anti aging program should include metabolism boosters in the form of exercise. Consistent strength training and cardio will help you to feel better and look younger.
