Grapeseed Oil
I only learned about grapeseed oil recently and was very interested in learning more. It is a polyunsaturated oil that is made from the seeds of grapes after winemaking. It is an excellent source of vitamin E and is rich in linoleic acid (omega-6). This is one of the essential fatty acids that the human body does not produce on its own.Like olive oil, it seems to raise "good" cholesterol and lower the "bad." From an anti-aging standpoint, this oil has benefits as well. Lipids form an important part of the skin barrier. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are required for the production of lipids. This helps to keep the skin hydrated and more youthful looking. From a cooking standpoint, grape seed oil is economical. Usually only 1/3 - 1/2 the amount of oil is needed to achieve the same results as with other cooking oils. It has a high smoking point so there is less danger of it burning. Polyunsaturated oils do have a shorter shelf life (usually 6-12 months) so be sure to store your oil in a cool, dark place. When buying grape seed oil, be sure to find out how the oil is extracted. Unfortunately, many of the oils on the market are chemically extracted. Choose one that is cold pressed. It will be more expensive, but the health benefits are much greater. And who wants more chemicals in their food? I've found a
source for expeller (cold) pressed oil
that I can offer my readers. It will be shipped directly from the company and is well wrapped to prevent breakage. I use grapeseed oil in all of my cooking and
olive oil
for dipping and in salads. This gives me two great tasting, healthy oils.
