Facial Exercises

Do facial exercises work? Or do they just give more wrinkles? We'll explore some of the theories behind these exercises so you can see if they are right for your antiaging program.

Our faces move every day as we talk, smile, frown and make other facial expressions. Constant repetitive movements can contribute to wrinkles.

Recently, I've begun to see magazine articles and websites that recommend using facial exercises to reduce wrinkles. The theory is that by exercising the muscles under the skin, they will tighten and remove the wrinkles and reduce sagging skin.

Theoretically, this is possible. However there have been no studies that prove this. It is difficult to determine for certain whether or not these exercises are effective. These muscles do not grow or gain much strength because, unlike muscles in your arms and legs, you cannot add resistance.

Estheticians often work the muscles in the face during a facial. Licensed massage therapists also use these exercises. When performed by a trained professional, they can be effective in relieving tension, and increasing circulation.

Many dermatologists and plastic surgeons caution against exercising the face, stating that they cause more wrinkles because the exercises require repetitive movements. In fact, even those who recommend exercising the facial muscles state that done incorrectly, they can cause wrinkles.

If you choose to do exercises for the face here are a few tips to remember.

➣ Don't pull your skin downward. Always use an upward motion. This includes when you put on your makeup.

➣ Don't squint. I caught myself doing that just the other day as I was thinking. That movement causes the vertical lines between your eyes.

➣ Look in a mirror as you do the exercises. If it accentuates your wrinkles. Don't keep doing that routine.

Facial exercises to stimulate circulation can make sense, but use caution in relying on them to decrease your wrinkles. Your antiaging program is better off using good quality skin care, protecting your skin from the sun and refraining from repetitive movements.
