The Best Antiaging Skin Care Products Do Not Include These Ingredients
While there are certain
ingredients that are recommended
for anti-aging skin care, there are some ingredients that should not be included. The best antiaging skin care products do not include: Mineral oil – Mineral oil is derived from petroleum. When used as intended it is harmless. And since it is inexpensive many cosmetic companies use it in their formulations. However, it is also occlusive. This means that mineral oil creates a barrier on the skin. It just sits there. This blocks the absorption of any beneficial ingredients. In some instances it can even clog pores. Petroleum – For the same reason that mineral oil should not be in your skin care products, you should also steer clear of any petroleum ingredients. In addition to blocking the absorption of nutrients, it also blocks the normal respiration of the skin. Your skin can’t breathe. Waxes – This doesn’t even sound appealing. Waxes also can block pores and can attract pollutants, dirt and bacteria. Alcohol (proyl, isopropyl) – These types of alcohols dry the skin and strips the skin of its acid mantle. Our skin has a naturally occurring acid mantle that protects our skin from bacteria and other harmful elements. Alcohol is too drying and strips the acid mantle from our skin. Collagen – Our skin contains
collagen
and we should do what we can to increase our collagen levels as we age. However, adding collagen to skin care products is not a good idea. Collagen is an animal product with molecules too large to penetrate the skin and can clog pores. The best antiaging skin care products encourage our bodies to increase its own collagen. Parabens (Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl) - These are used as preservatives in many cosmetic products. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. The cosmetic industry claims they are safe in small amounts so they are still widely used. Because they are toxic, it is best to choose skin care products that do not contain parabens. Synthetic Dyes – Dyes in skin care products serve no useful purpose. And there is a debate as to whether synthetic colors are safe or if they might be damaging in the long run. In either case, they can cause allergic reactions in some people. Since we don’t need them, why use them. You can spot them on the label. They will be listed as FD&C followed by a color and a number. Synthetic Fragrances – There are many synthetic fragrances used in skin care products. As with dyes, they serve no useful purpose other than to make the products smell good. However, synthetic fragrances can clog pores and cause allergic reactions. In fact, when someone has an allergic reaction to a skin care product, most of the time it is caused by either the artificial dyes or the artificial fragrance. Animal products –The thought of putting animal products on my skin doesn’t sound very appealing. But more importantly, these can be drying to your skin. The best antiaging skin care products are botanically (or plant) based. Skin care products contain a lot of different ingredients. Antiaging products contain even more. I use products that do not contain any of these and they work great. It’s important to read labels and know what’s in your products. Doing this will help you to choose the best antiaging skin care products available.
