Balance Exercises

One problem with getting older is the decrease in balance and the resulting falls that can occur. Balance exercises can help increase your stability and decrease the chance of falling.

One antiaging tips is to increase your stability. You should incorporate exercises that increase your balance two to three times per week.

bosu ball

  • One of the easiest and simplest exercises is to stand on one leg with your eyes closes. Be sure that you have a chair or something else within arm's reach in case you lose your balance. You can do increase the length of time as your balance increases.
  • Another simple one legged exercise is to stand on one leg as you bend the opposite knee. Try to hold the position as long as you can. You can also reach out the opposite foot as far as possible without touching the floor. Be sure to work both legs.
  • Walking heel to toe can also improve your balance. Walk by placing the heel of one foot in front of the toes of the other foot. Your heel and toes should touch. Take several heel to toe steps across the room.

tai chi

If you want something a little more complex, you can try tai chi. Several studies have shown that the risk of falling can be reduced 1/3 to 1/2 by practicing tai chi regularly. Another study done in Hong Kong with people who had had a stroke showed that those who practiced tai chi demonstrated better balance than those who just did general exercises.

One way to improve your balance is to put yourself in unstable situations. Using something like a wobble board or a Bosu ball (a half ball) can increase your stability. Even walking on uneven surfaces, like a dirt path or a sandy beach can help your body adjust to changes in balance.

One of my favorite ways to work on my balance is to use my Wii. Wii Fit has several excellent exercises to increase your stability, as well as perception, reflexes and flexibility. Plus, it's fun! You can put together your own antiaging fitness program right in your own home.

So no matter what balance exercises you choose, be sure to think about how you can increase your balance and stability. Not only will you have less of a chance of falling, but you'll feel more confident too.
