Antiaging Facial Treatment

There are several options open to women (& men) who are not satisfied with seeing wrinkles. For these, an antiaging facial treatment might be an option. I've listed several below with both pros and cons. Be sure to check with your doctor before choosing a treatment option.

Botox - This common term for BOTOX® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) is the most popular cosmetic surgery available in the US. Botox is injected into the muscles between the eyebrows to relax the "frown" muscles and temporarily diminish the vertical lines between the eyebrows.

Pros - it does relax the muscles thereby diminishing lines on the face, usually for a period of 3-8 months.

Cons - Botulinum toxin is one of the most poisonous naturally occuring substances in the world. While it is administered in very small doses and as such has a low degree of toxicity, it is still a poison being injected into your body.

Dermal Fillers - There are two types of dermal fillers. One type is more temporary while the other seems to have a more permanent effect. I've listed two of the brand names although there are others that are similar both on the market or in development.

ArteFill - ArteFill was approved by the FDA in 2006. It is a combination of medical grade polymethylmethacrylate microspheres and bovine collagen. It claims to have a longer lasting result than other dermal fillers, which are more temporary. A study, done by the company who produces it, stated that after 5 years the results of the treatment were still effective. ArteFill is injected above the skin's fat layer and "fills in" the space under the wrinkle.

Pros - ArteFill seems to be a longer lasting filler and is effective in decreasing the look of wrinkles.

Cons - It is made with bovine collagen. Those who have a sensitivity to bovine collagen would have an adverse reaction. Also, this is not an option for those who adopt a vegan lifestyle.

Juvederm - This is the lastest temporary dermal filler. Rather than use animal collagen, this injection filler uses hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occuring substance found in mammals, including humans. This gel is also injected under the skin to plump up the area under the wrinkles and smooth them out.

Pros - This uses a substance naturally found in the body. It does reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid also seems to stop the breakdown of collagen.

Cons - All hyaluronic acids are absorbed into the body within 6 - 9 months. Also the company that makes Juvederm states that it should not be used by those with severe allergies.

Topical Dermal Fillers - These fillers are used on top of the skin rather than be injected into the body. The better ones are made with hyaluronic acid which soften and diminish the look of deep lines.

Pros - There are no injections and eliminates the possible side effects of injection treatment. There are good ones on the market that do work well, especially over the course of time. The cost is much less than a surgical treatment.

Cons - The results of each treatment doesn't last as long. Because they are topical they would need to be applied every day. They may not have the dramatic immediate results that cosmetic surgery would have.

I have not tried any of the surgical antiaging facial treatments. I have tried the topical dermal fillers. At present, I am using one made with hyaluronic spheres and GABA which I am pleased with. You can find out more about this product at by business website.

If you do choose to explore a surgical option, be sure that you are comfortable with the doctor and have asked a lot of questions. Each of these has potential side effects that you should be aware of.
