Ageless Face, Ageless Mind



Ageless Face, Ageless Mind was written by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD. and published in 2007. Dr. Perricone is a dermatologist who has become an anti-aging expert. He has written several previous books and is considered a #1 New York Times bestselling author. I enjoyed reading this book and used some of the research in this website.

The book is divided into 5 parts. The chapters include:

Part One: The Secret of the AGEs

Chapter 1 - Understanding Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs)
This chapter explains what AGEs are and how they are formed. Perricone writes that AGEs "...are among the most age-accelerating substances known to science."

Chapter 2 - Finding the AGEs in Your Food
In addition to our bodies making AGEs, we are also ingesting them in some of the foods we eat. Manufacturers of some food products even add them to foods. This chapter explains the ingredients that we should look for when shopping for groceries.

Part Two: Food That FIghts AGEs

Chapter 3 - The Anti-AGEs Diet
This chapter tells us what foods are best for our antiaging plan. He lists the foods that give us the most fiber, vegetables that give the most nutrients and even which spices help combat AGEs.

Chapter 4 - The Guide to Anti-AGEs Shopping, Cooking and Preparation
"The purpose of this chapter is to show how to recognize and avoid the foods and methods of food preparation that trigger AGEs." This quote best describes the information that is contained in this chapter. Dr. Perricone tells us how to find the best meats, seafood and poultry; which dairy has the best antiaging properties, and which grains we should eat.

Part Three: Nutritional Supplements to Reverse AGEs

Chapter 5 - The ABCs of Anti-AGEs Suplements
In this chapter, we are introduced to several supplements that Dr. Perricone recommends for antiaging. He goes into quite a bit of detail on Alpha lipoic acid and benfotiamine. He also gives information on several other supplements that can contribute to an ageless face and ageless mind.

Chapter 6 - The Carnosine Breakthrough
Carnosine is a neuropeptide and occurs naturally in healthy muscles and some tissues. It is an antioxidant that can protect our proteins from being damaged. This chapter explains the research behind the supplements that Dr. Perricone recommends.

Chapter 7 - The Newest Anti-Glycating Agents: CoQ-10, Glutathione, Pyridoxamine, Pycnogenol and Resveratrol.
When I first read that title, my eyes glazed over. However, Dr. Perricone's writing style is easy to read and the research terminology is interspersed with "real life" stories. And while this chapter is more technical than the others, it contains very interesting information.

Part Four: Anti-AGE Strategies for the Skin

Chapter 8 - Seven Threats to Youthful Skin
I read this chapter with interest since my main goal in antiaging is to look younger. Seven threats to an ageless face are given. Several of the seven threats that are mentioned are already discussed further in this website. The threats include:
Diet
Excessive Exposure to the Sun
Stress
Smoking
Alcohol
Not Enough Sleep
Lack of Exercise

Chapter 9 - Topical Treatments to Reverse AGEs in the Skin
Although our entire bodies are getting older, most people notice aging first on their skin. This chapter explains how AGEs damage skin and the ingredients that can be used to improve aging skin. He also writes about treatments that he uses with his patients to give them an ageless face.

One section that I appreciate is the paragraph where he explains that we need to take care of our entire bodies. Just changing one area and neglecting another won't improve our overall health.

Part Five: The Anti-AGEs Lifestyle

Chapter 10 - Reversing AGE-Related Decline with Exercise
This chapter explains the benefits of exercise, benefits not only for our bodies but also for our brain. He gives examples of various exercises and there are sample goals that will help you to set your own as you seek to improve your strength, flexibility and endurance.

Chapter 11 - AGE-less Recipes
The final chapter gives recipes for foods that do not cause AGEs. There are also some smoothie recipes if you wish to follow his advice and include green foods in your diet.

The book finishes with a Resources section with information on where to buy the various food, supplements and products mentioned in the book. I learned quite a bit reading this and was pleased that, although it contained the science behind the information, it was easy to read. I would recommend Ageless Face, Ageless Mind to anyone interested in looking and feeling younger.
