Aging Too Soon?

No one wants to look old before their time. But are some products causing women to show signs of aging too soon?

Most antiaging products work by increasing moisture, increasing collagen or by breaking down a layer of skin to increase cell renewal. In older women this is fine. It gives the appearance of more youthful skin.

The problem is that younger women don't need that layer removed. The key is to read the ingredients. Products with alpha hydroxy acid works wonders for those of us over 40 and having a few (or more) wrinkles. But if you don't have wrinkles and you are a younger woman, stay away from these products which can damage your skin and actually make you age faster. Instead choose a quality moisturizer to keep your skin soft and supple.

Some experts suggest a moisturizing day cream with SPF during the day and a night cream without SPF to moisture your skin at night. This is good advice no matter what your age. Then add antiaging products only as you age and need them.

In the News - Magazines stress looking youthful

If you've looked at any of the magazines as you're waiting in line at the grocery checkout counter, you'll agree that every magazine has something to say about anti-aging. Many of these have great advice. Others are just jumping on the bandwagon.

One reputable magazine that researches their articles well is Reader's Digest. Yes, even they have antiaging articles. The most recent one that I read gave several suggestions to trick your body into staying young. The article gave all the scientific reasons these work, but I'm boiling them all down into a nutshell.

While using good skincare is important, that's not the most important thing to keep you looking young. Researchers have found that 1/4 of aging is based on our genes and the other 3/4 is based solely on lifestyle and behavior. And that's something we can change.

  • As we age our cells begin to break down as a result of free radicals. You can give your body the power to combat this by eating foods containing flavonoids and carotenoids. Okay, that just means eat fruits and veggies that are full of color. The brighter the foods, the better they are for your body.

  • The second trick to keeping your body young is reducing stress. Stress causes more problems than many people realize. We often joke about being stressed but it really is no joke. Taking steps to reduce stress can actually help keep you feeling and looking younger.

  • Finally, reduce your sugar intake. I know this sounds like a repeat of my last ezine, but this is important. Sugar (or glucose) affects the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what gives skin its elasticity. So, too much sugar causes the skin to show more wrinkles and also can cause join problems and arthritis.

If you've checked out any of the articles in the popular magazines, you'll find that all of them give this similar advice. Now instead of just reading it, it's time to do it!

Skin Care For Every Age

In the main article called Aging Too Soon, I warned about the dangers of using antiaging skin care too early. But it is important to use good skin care. Many ingredients can be damaging and harmful. The best antiaging skin care, or any skin care for that matter should contain only ingredients that are beneficial to your skin.

If you are looking for something that might work for you, I recommend skin care from Arbonne International. Of course, they have antiaging products that have worked wonders for me, but they also have a line for younger women containing fresh fruits and vegetable cells that moisturize without the alpha hydroxy acids and other antiaging ingredients. They provide a 45 money back guarantee so you can try the products without risk. Feel free to contact me if you would like suggestions or advice on what might work for you.

Can't get rid of belly fat? Relax!

Did you read the section about stress? Did you know that stress is related to belly fat? The fat between your organs in your abdomen absorb stress hormones. So when you are stressed, you tend to gain weight more quickly in your stomach area.

If you deal with stress effectively, your waist should be less than 1/2 your height. So measure your waist, then divide your height in inches by 2. Is your waist measurement less than that? If not, start working on getting rid of that stress.

One stress reducing technique is to practice deep breathing. Do this before you are stressed. Practice deep breathing for 2-4 minutes every day or at least 4 times a week. Then, when you are under stress, take deep breaths to relax.

Orange Wolfberry Muffins

The weather is starting to get cooler and it's feeling more like fall where I live in Pennsylvania. This is the time of year that I like to start making warm breakfasts. One quick and easy breakfast is muffins. Buy a muffin at a gourmet coffee shop and you'll end up with lots of sugar and calories. (Not to mention being several dollars poorer.) Make your own muffins and freeze them. Then, pop one in the microwave and you'll have a warm, delicious homemade muffin.

These muffins are made with healthy ingredients and contain wolfberries. You may not be familiar with them but they are high in antioxidants. You can substitute goji berries or cranberries. This recipe was adapted from a vegan recipe on Eat.Drink.Better.com.

Ingredients
1 3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup Sucanat or Rapadura
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup almonds, chopped
1/3 cup grapeseed oil
1 cup wolfberries
1 cup almond milk
zest of 1/2 an orange or 1 drop orange essential oil (use a quality oil, like Young Living Essential Oils)

Directions
Combine flour, sucanat, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, combine egg, oil and milk. Make a hole in the dry ingredients and add the milk mixture. Stir until just moistened. Gently stir in the wolfberries, almonds and orange zest. Spoon into 12 greased muffin tins or use paper muffin liners.

Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 18-22 minutes. You can test the muffins with a toothpick. It should come out clean. Enjoy these tasty muffins for breakfast, a snack or even with a meal.
