I love this time of year. The air is cold and crisp in the Northeast United States and Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. It's a wonderful time for family and friends. But it can also be a time of great stress. Some have families that are less than perfect, others are missing loved ones and the holidays only increase their pain, still others are overwhelmed my all the activities and planning for the holidays.

This issue of the Anti-aging Extra focuses on stress relief. Stress causes aging. You can see it on your face and it affects your whole body. So this season, try some of these stress busters and enjoy your holidays while fighting the aging process.

Holiday Stress Busters

Stress always seems to increase during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. We all want our homes to look wonderful, our dinners to be delicious (and on time) and our parties talked about until next year. Yikes - talk about stress. Try some of these stress busters to make your holidays a little more relaxing.

  • Don't expect everything to be perfect - Let's be realistic. None of us is perfect and trying to be increases stress. So let it go and laugh at the little mishaps.
  • Make a plan - There are lots of great organizational website that help you to lay out your plans for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. My favorite is found at Organized Christmas.com.
It's a great resource to help you get your holidays organized.
  • Take time for yourself - We get so wrapped up in wrapping, buying, visiting, baking, etc. that it's no wonder we're under stress. Plan time for yourself. Take a relaxing bath. Sit by the fire with a cup of cocoa (dark, of course for the anti-oxidants) and listen to your favorite Christmas music. Schedule times of relaxing just for you.
  • Don't drink much alcohol - Many holiday parties include the consumption of alcohol. However, studies have shown that drinking over 2 ounces can actually increase stress levels.

In the News - Thanksgiving - A Dangerous Holiday

Thanksgiving is not just a holiday to be thankful, it's also considered to be the most dangerous holiday. Now I'm not talking about overeating. I'm talking about driving.

Forbes.com hosted an article that showed how traffic stats over the past few years have indicated that Thanksgiving is the most deadly in terms of auto accidents. Emergency workers throughout the US are on high alert due to this long holiday weekend.

We don't think of Thanksgiving as being dangerous, however more and more people are driving rather than flying to holiday destinations. In addition, they cram in as many gatherings as possible, many including alcohol.

But even for those who don't drink, Thanksgiving can be a challenge. After a few days of visiting and enjoying friends and family, many people are just plain tired when they hop in the car to return to their homes.

So to enjoy a longer life, use caution when driving this Thanksgiving, get enough rest and choose a designated driver if you must drink.

    Holiday Hands

Don't like looking older than you are? Then make sure you take care of your hands. Dry, cracked hands as well as ragged nails cause us to look older. Keep your nails trimmed and clean. And use a hand cream to keep your hands soft. As the winter approaches, our hands dry out quicker (not to mention what soap does to them).

PRODUCT SUGGESTION - Treat your hands to a cleansing gel and hand cream with shea butter. Shea butter helps to make your skin soft and heal dry hands. One product that I've tried can be found at Arbonne International.

    Creaky Knees

What's that? Did I hear your knees creak? As I got older, I noticed that my knees weren't as strong as they used to be. It was a little more difficult to get up from the floor. So I started doing exercises to strengthen the knees. Because the knee is supported my several muscles, exercising these muscles, in turn, will strengthen the knee. Check out my latest article on knee exercises.

    Holiday Recipe - Mulled Cider

I'm not going to give you lots of wonderful recipes to try. Reduce your stress and concentrate on your old stand-bys. It's less stressful when you know exactly how a recipe will turn out. However, a good friend gave me a recipe for a hot spiced cider that is full on health benefits.

    Mulled Cider

This recipe makes enough spice mix for 14 gallons of apple cider. Why not make a batch and give some away as a fragrant gift idea. Or keep it in a covered container for the next time you want a warm winter treat.

    1/2 cup ground cinnamon
a little less than 1/2 cup star anise
    1/4 cup whole allspice
    1/4 cup whole cloves
    1/4 cup dried orange peel
    1 3/4 teaspoon cardoman
    1 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Mix together. Use 1-2 Tablespoons per gallon of apple cider. You can tie it up in a cheesecloth bag or simply stir it into the cider. Heat the cider and serve hot. YUM! Plus the smell is wonderful.
