Interesterified Fat

There's a new fat out in the market today - interesterified fat. In the process of getting rid of trans fats, specifically partially hydrogenated oil, manufactureres have started using interesterified fats. These fats are made by chemically inserting saturated fatty acids into the molecules of vegetable oil to make it last longer. (You know how long some foods are on the shelves.)

But in January, the Consumer Reports on Health stated that, "...some research suggests that the new fats are just as bad for you as trans fats. In fact, they suggest that there is research to show that these fats act like trans fats and raise bad cholesterol and lower the good.

I wonder why we can't leave our food alone. Why do we chemically change it when oils like olive oil and grapeseed oil benefit our health. My sister commented that it's interesting that the word "terrified" is in the name. (Okay, it's not really, but sort of.)

My suggestion would be to leave foods with interesterified fats alone, just like those with hydrogenated oils. Choose foods with natural ingredients (that you can pronounce) and it will be much healthier for your body.

AGE - Not Just a Number

My sister in law had a milestone birthday this week. She is just a year older than me, but we kidded her about her age. But in this article I'm not talking about how many years you've been born. Instead, I'm talking about advanced glycation end products, or AGE for short. This has been in the news quite a lot lately. Basically AGEs are formed when sugar molecules attach themselves to protein molecules without an enzyme. It makes the protein ineffective and ages our bodies.

One of the most common causes of AGE is the way we cook our foods. High, dry heat (like grilling, broiling, etc) which gives that nice brown color is actually causing AGE. The best way to avoid AGEs is to use moist heat. Stewing, boiling, steaming are all much better for us. To find out more about AGE check out my latest page on AGEs.

Do You Need Supplements?

If you eat healthy foods, do you still need to take anti-aging supplements? That is a good question. It is best to meet our nutritional needs through our diet. However, our fruits and vegetables don't contain as many vitamins as they once did. Since the minerals and nutrients in our soils are depleted, you may want to consider taking antiaging nutritional supplements.

But did you know that nutritional supplements are unregulated in the United States? It's important to know what you are buying. You can find a list of tips for buying nutritional supplements on my nutritional supplement page.

PRODUCT SUGGESTION - You may want to consider trying Daily Power Packs that contain a combination of multivitamin and multimineral tablets, as well as digestive enzymes and antioxidants specifically designed either for men or women. You can find these Power Packs at Arbonne.com. You can browse without committing to a purchase.

Book Review: 50 Secrets of the World's Longest Living People

I just recently read a book by Sally Beare entitled 50 Secrets of the World's Longest Living People. It listed 5 different people groups from around the world who typically live the longest and gave the secrets behind each groups' longevity. It was an easy book to read and affirmed much of the information that is found on my website.

If you would like to read a book that quickly and easily explains how to incorporate anti-aging habits into your life, I would recommend this book.

Anti-AGE Steak

Okay, it's not on the grill, but this steak dish is low in AGEs and full of nutrition. Try this crockpot meal for an easy dinner.

2 pounds sirloin steak cut into 1" cubes
2 teaspoons dried basil
4 clove garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cups beef broth
16 oz. jar of salsa
16 oz. bag of california blend veggies (broccoli, cauliflower & carrots)
2 potatoes, peeled and diced
salt and pepper to taste
1 can great northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup fresh spinach, torn

Combine everything except the beans and spinach in a crockpot. Let simmer on low for 6-8 hours. Add beans and allow to cook for another hour or so then throw in the spinach. You can serve immediately after the spinach has wilted or let it cook for awhile. That's up to you. Serve 6.
