What is a Flexitarian?

I was reading an article on a popular weight loss website just the other day and came across the term "Flexitarian." It didn't take me long to realize that I am one - I just didn't know it had a name. Basically, a flexitarian is someone who is only a part time vegetarian. I try to eat veggie meals about 3 days a week. That makes me a flexitarian.

We know that too much meat isn't all that good for us. (See the article on the alkaline diet.) Fruits and vegetables give our bodies much needed anti-aging nutrients. But many of us aren't ready for the drastic change of becoming a vegetarian. If you are one or are making changes in that direction - GREAT! It is a very healthy lifestyle. However, if that lifestyle isn't for you, try substituting a meatless meal instead of one with meat occasionally for a healthier alternative. Check out some recipes to get you started.

In the News - Porcupine Collagen Filler

As an alternative to BOTOX, the FDA has just recently approved a new collagen-based facial filler called Evolence. Evolence has been used in other countries such as Canada and Europe for several years.

While this technology is supposed to mimic naturally occurring collagen in the skin, it is made from porcupine collagen. The filler is injected and is touted as helping to maintain and enhance the strength and elasticity of the skin. If you are interested in injectable dermal fillers, Evolence should be available later this year in cosmetic clinics.

However, if animal based injectable fillers aren't for you there are other options. Botanically-based anti-aging products (including topical wrinkle fillers) are available. One source is Arbonne International.

Summer Sun Skin Savers

Summer is here in North America and lots of us like to get outdoors. Did you know that the sun and other environmental factors contribute about 90% of the physical signs of aging? Protect your skin every time you go outside to keep those lines and wrinkles at bay as you get older. If you are a vegetarian or flexitarian (or just want to use healthy products) consider products that don't contain any animal products or by-products.

PRODUCT SUGGESTION - Everyone should use some sort of sunscreen every time you're outdoors. Arbonne International has products that are botanically based (certified vegan) and have anti-aging ingredients. Use one every day to protect your skin from the sun aging rays.

Alkaline Diet

An alkaline diet is based on choosing foods that, when metabolized, affect the pH of the body. Foods that are acid forming usually consist of meats, refined grains and processed foods. Hmmm - some of the same ones that cause aging. Other foods, like vegetables and fruits are alkaline forming and are better for your body.

The normal pH of our bodies should be slightly alkaline. This doesn't mean that you should never have another piece of meat. But you may want to consider reducing the amount of meat you eat - maybe even become a flexitarian. You can read more about the alkaline diet on my newest webpage.

Healthy Grilling Tips

It's grilling time in North America. Unfortunately, research is coming out that suggests that grilling foods causes aging. Does that mean you should turn your grill into a planter? Not at all. Here are a few anti-aging grill tips.

Don't grill everyday. On other days eat foods that are cooked in moist heat or water.

Use a marinade to keep the foods moist.

Don't get stuck in a rut and always grill meat. As we continue the theme of flexitarian in this newsletter, I thought you might enjoy a grilled veggie recipe.

Grilled Veggie Kabobs

Assorted veggies (zucchini, summer squash, red or green peppers, onions, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, etc. - Choose what you like)
1/4 cup olive or grapeseed oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp. thyme
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

Combine all ingredients except for veggies. Cut veggies into bite sized pieces. Thread veggies on skewers. (If using wooden skewers, soak in water for 15-20 minutes before using.) Lay the skewers in a dish and pour the marinade over them. Allow to marinate for 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Put on the grill (medium high) about 10 minutes or until nicely browned. Turn and baste occasionally.

Don't have time to make a marinade? Use an organic bottled Italian dressing instead.
